Product Features and Usage
The Enzell Eco-loo is a beautifully designed, chemical-free, waterless composting toilet ideal for off-grid living, campervans, and tiny homes. It separates urine and solids to prevent odours and uses a built-in extractor fan to maintain a fresh bathroom environment.
It features a sleek, smart design that blends seamlessly into any bathroom, avoids the bulkiness and complexity of other models, and uses smooth, non-porous materials resistant to moisture and smell. The urine separation and continuous fan extraction ensure no odours.
The Classic Eco-loo is self-contained with an onboard urine tank and an LED indicator for emptying, making it ideal for mobile homes like campervans. The Lifestyle Eco-loo pipes urine to an external container (not included), suitable for permanent tiny home installations with less frequent emptying.
Urine is separated into a tank (internal for Classic, external for Lifestyle), and solids go into a 15-litre container lined with a compostable bag. Add wood chips or coconut coir to absorb moisture when you change the bag. The fan dehydrates solids and removes odours.
No, the design prevents smells by separating liquids and solids (avoiding anaerobic bacteria) and using a quiet, continuous fan to extract air outdoors.
Everyone must sit to ensure urine is directed to the front without splashing, maintaining the separation of liquids and solids.
Yes, with the Lifestyle Eco-loo, urine can be piped to an external tank, sewer, or soak pit. Consult your local council or a plumber for advice.
Yes, while designed for off-grid use, it can work in any home with proper waste management setup (e.g., external tank or sewer connection for the Lifestyle model), check with your council if sewer connections are available on site your Enzell-loo may have to be a secondry toilet.
It depends on usage, but for a small household, the 15-litre solids container typically needs emptying every 7-10 days .
Yes, it’s user-friendly, but children should be taught to sit during use and open the solids flap correctly to ensure proper separation and hygiene.
Installation and Maintenance
It’s easy to install with no specialist skills required. You’ll need a 12V DC power supply for the fan (via battery or transformer), a 40mm PVC pipe for air extraction (ducted outside), and four stainless steel screws (included) to fix it to the floor . Full instructions are provided.
A 12V DC power supply is required for the extraction fan, which can come from a house battery or a 240AC-to-12VDC transformer (available at electronics stores).
Without the cap, flies and insects can enter the pipe. It must be fitted and placed in an accessible spot for regular dust removal.
Use 27-litre (medium) compostable plastic bags available at most supermarkets. Ensure they are certified compostable to maintain the eco-friendly design.
Regularly empty the urine tank and solids container, clean the toilet with mild, non-abrasive cleaners, and check the extraction fan and duct for dust buildup. The insect screen cap should be cleaned periodically.

Place it in a compost system (for non food growing use) if permitted by local regulations, or dispose of it as general waste. Check with your local council for composting guidelines.
Other
You can successfully and safely compost on site although you wouldn't put the compost on your vegetable garden as a safety practice. There is quite a bit online about composting human waste. Here is a good article click or you can "get the book" click . This is seen as the definitive word on the subject. General recommendation is to use a separate bin, preferably a tumble bin where you can keep the material off the ground while you compost. A 50:50 mix between "Brown" and "Green" is generally recommended but opinion varies. Dried garden waste like leaves or you could use hay or straw to provide the brown carbon. The human waste (poo) provides the "Green" part of the mix.
We only sell online but we do have toilets on display at the Halswell Menzshed in Christchurch. Give us a phone call if you would like to arrange a time to come in and have a look.
For enquiries outside of Christchurch we are happy to have a phone call to answer your questions so you can decide if an Enzell toilet would work in your situation.
As a general response, yes Enzell toilets can be installed in a consented home but it depends on the local council regulations and availability of town sewer system.
If a town sewer system is available, councils will require you to connect to the sewer for the principal toilet in a consented dwelling. Secondary toilets like in a sleepout can be a waterless toilet. If a town sewer system is not available, waterless toilets are an accepted solution, however you will need to consult your local council for their requirements. Disposing of the urine can be to a soak pit or a grey water system, again you need to talk with the local council to understand their requirements.
